Monte Legnoncino

If you are a nature lover and you are looking for a spectacular but not too demanding walk, this is the article you are looking for. We will take you to discover one of the most suggestive views of the eastern shore of Lake Como: Mount Legnoncino (1,714m asl). There are several paths to reach its top, but the option we will talk about is suitable for everyone, even for trekking strollers and less adventurous hikers. With your car you will have to drive up from the village of Dervio, and the destination is the Roccoli Lorla refuge. The road is quite narrow in some parts, but with some attention you will get there without problems. Once you reach the refuge (1,463m asl), you can leave your car in the large parking area available for hikers and you are ready to start your walk.

In fact, an old military road that starts right in front of the refuge will gently lead you up to the summit of Legnoncino. The difference in altitude is about 251m and at a normal pace you will be at the top in about 45 minutes. Alternatively, for more trained people, it is possible to take a more "vertical" path which, with a little effort, will take you to Monte Legnoncino in about 20 minutes. However, both trails are well signposted. Once you reach your destination, the panorama will repay you of all your efforts. In fact, an incredible view of the lake and the surrounding mountains will stand out in front of you.

On a sunny day you can even enjoy the view of the whole Lake Como, of the mountains of the Lecco and Como branches, and you will also have a privileged glimpse of the nearby Monte Legnone which, with its 2609 m asl, is the highest mountain in the pre-Alps of Lombardy.

The view offered by Mount Legnoncino was also exploited in the past for war purposes. The road you will take to reach your destination is, in fact, a former military road built shortly before World War I, when trenches were dug here as part of a larger defensive line, the famous Northern Frontier, which also included large fortifications like Forte Montecchio Nord in Colico.

Not only nature but also history, then. Monte Legnoncino is certainly the ideal destination for a trip to the mountains with friends and family. A different day spent in unspoiled nature where the only sound that will accompany you along the way will be the song of the birds and the blowing of the wind in the gorges of the nearby valleys.
