The eastern side of Lake Como, which includes villages such as Bellano, Varenna, Lecco, and many others, is easily accessible by car or public transport. Here are different options for reaching this wonderful part of the lake.

By car 🚘

From Milan:

  • Take the A9 highway (Milan–Como) and continue on SS36. The journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • You can reach Lecco and from there follow the road along the lake, passing through Varenna, Bellano, and other towns.

From Bergamo:

  • Take SS42 towards Lecco. The journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • From Lecco, you can easily continue towards the most famous locations along the eastern branch.

From Lugano (Switzerland):

  • If you're coming from Switzerland, you can reach Lake Como in about 1 hour, passing through the Chiasso border and continuing on SS340 towards Menaggio and Varenna.

Traffic Alert: If you're traveling by car, keep in mind that during peak times, traffic can be heavy, especially in more touristy areas such as Varenna and Bellano. It's also advisable to arrive early in popular spots to ensure you find convenient parking.

 

By train 🚆

The train is one of the most comfortable and scenic options for reaching the eastern branch of Lake Como. The Lecco station is well-connected and offers numerous trains departing from Milan and other cities.

From Milan:

  • Trains from Milan Centrale to Lecco depart approximately every hour, and the journey takes about 40 minutes.

  • From Lecco, you can continue by train to Varenna, Bellano, and Colico, which are connected by a train service that allows you to enjoy the landscape along the lake's shore.

From Bergamo:

  • Direct trains from Bergamo to Lecco run regularly every hour, and the journey takes about 40 minutes.

 

By plane 🛩️

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP):

  • Distance from Lake Como: About 90 km (1 hour and 30 minutes by car).

  • Connections: From Malpensa Airport, you can take a direct train to Milano Centrale station (about 50 minutes), from where you can continue by train to Lecco or other locations on the eastern branch (about 40 minutes from Milan).

  • Direct transfers: There are also shuttle and taxi services connecting Malpensa directly to the main locations of Lake Como, such as Lecco and Varenna.

Milan Linate Airport (LIN):

  • Distance from Lake Como: About 70 km (1 hour and 15 minutes by car).

  • Connections: From Linate, you can take a train from Milano Centrale, or if you prefer a more direct option, there are also buses and taxis that will take you to your destination.

  • Direct transfers: There are also shuttle buses and taxis from Linate to the eastern branch of the lake.

Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (BGY):

  • Distance from Lake Como: About 90 km (1 hour and 30 minutes by car).

  • Connections: From Bergamo, you can take a train to Lecco (about 40 minutes), and from there, continue by train or bus to locations on the eastern branch.

  • Direct transfers: There are also taxis and shuttles from Bergamo offering direct transport to Lake Como.

!! ATTENTION:  THE RAILWAY LINE MILAN - LECCO - SONDRIO - TIRANO  WILL BE OUT OF SERVICE FROM JUNE 15 TO SEPTEMBER 15, 2025, DUE TO INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE WORKS.
